Description
Refurbishment of residential rooms and anti-ligature sanitaryware and vanity units to a health care facility providing treatment for children and young people up to the age of 18.
In addition to usual considerations in a healthcare environment, there was a significant risk that some residents might attempt to self-harm.
Risk Management
We employed only DBS-certified operatives and subcontractors. Meticulous housekeeping reduced opportunities for self-harm. We maintained Tools and Equipment Checklists to ensure that all tools and sharps were accounted for, even counting screws.
We segregated the works areas via separate access routes, phasing and staging the works, providing physical lockdown areas, safety barriers, and working off-peak hours during unavoidably disruptive activities. Mandatory working in twos made sure doors were properly closed to keep patients away from works areas.
We also operated a Fobs for Keys policy, whereby operatives collected secure Chalkhill key fobs each morning in exchange for car keys to ensure that they could not drive away from the premises without first returning their Key Fobs.
We also arranged for CAMHS staff to have a space during operative inductions to personally discuss client rules, such as confidentiality and contraband, and field any questions.
