CASE STUDY
Sackville School, Glazing & Roofing, East Grinstead 2018
Substantial Glazing, Roofing and Fire Protection Works at an Occupied Secondary School During Exam Season
-
“From the pre-start to the last wrap up meeting, we felt secure that Fowlers had our best interests at heart. Inevitably for a project of this size, there were issues that arose, but these were few and far between and they were resolved quickly and efficiently ... I would not hesitate in recommending Fowlers as a contractor to any of my colleagues/peers.”
- Nicola Clapson, Business Manager, Sackville School -
“Fowler Building Contractors performed very well on the Sackville School project. They were able to programme the works around a live school whilst carrying out essential works out of hours minimising any impact on the school. They kept to the timescales and budget given and were of great assistance when any variations arose. The quality of workmanship was very good and performance overall was high. Jon Bugden and Will Lydon worked particularly hard on this project to ensure client satisfaction.”
- Mark Dibben, Brodie Plant Goddard Architects -
“There is good site safety focus, awareness and disciplines associated with operating in a school environment. Site management/personnel undertake regular safety training reviews and updates.”

Description
Sackville School is a secondary school and sixth form college in East Grinstead, with approximately 1600 students.
Works included substantial glazing and roofing works as indicated on the photographs at the bottom of this case study, along with associated scaffold design around the contours of the building and fire compartmentalisation works.
Key Challenges
- Minimising disruption: The school was occupied throughout the works, with exam season in full swing, requiring us to carry out these substantial refurbishment works with minimal impact on the school. We scheduled noisy works out of hours and on weekends, and synchronised our break times with the exam schedule to ensure works were not happening during exams, prioritising this the closer our works happened to be to the exam halls, taking into account any large physical barriers which offered sound protection such as large school blocks, etc.
- Fire proofing between floors: The project was scheduled around the time of the tragic Grenfell tower fire, so the fire safety of our planned installation was naturally reviewed. We consulted with Nullifier Consultants to enhance the performance of the fire compartmentalisation system and inspect our work on completion to provide assurance and peace of mind.
- Regular cost reports kept the client apprised of the financial position of the project, and extras were clearly costed and documented to ensure no overruns.
